Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) fundamentally altered the course of modern fiction with his stark, economical prose. Operating on what he called the "Iceberg Theory," he stripped away unnecessary exposition and heavy adjectives, trusting that the true emotional weight of a narrative should remain unstated, lurking just beneath the surface of the text.

His adventurous, heavily mythologized life provided the raw material for his art. Hemingway drew directly from his time as a wounded ambulance driver in World War I, an expatriate among the "Lost Generation" in 1920s Paris, and a correspondent during the Spanish Civil War. He wrote relentlessly about physical and psychological endurance, focusing on flawed characters striving to maintain their courage and dignity in an indifferent world. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954, his muscular, uncompromising style permanently swept away Victorian sentimentality.
