Washington Irving (b. 1783) was an American short-story writer, essayist, biographer, and diplomat widely regarded as one of the first internationally acclaimed American authors. Born in New York City, he achieved enduring fame by crafting distinctively American folklore and satirical prose during the early nineteenth century. His work played a pivotal role in establishing a recognized American literary identity distinct from European traditions.

Irving began his writing career publishing satirical essays under pseudonyms such as Diedrich Knickerbocker, releasing the comedic work A History of New York in 1809. Following the War of 1812, he moved to Europe, where he spent seventeen years immersing himself in regional folklore, history, and culture. These international experiences deeply influenced his storytelling, enabling him to blend European romantic traditions with American settings and legends.

In addition to his literary achievements, Irving pursued a notable diplomatic career, serving as the United States Minister to Spain from 1842 to 1846. Later in life, he wrote extensive historical biographies of figures such as George Washington and Christopher Columbus. He spent his remaining years at his Sunnyside estate in Tarrytown, New York, situated in the Hudson Valley that served as the backdrop for his most celebrated tales.
