Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer who became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She is renowned for her sophisticated portrayals of New York’s upper-class society at the turn of the twentieth century, blending sharp social satire with psychological depth.

Born into a wealthy family in New York City, Wharton spent much of her childhood traveling through Europe, which fostered a cosmopolitan perspective and a lifelong love for architecture and design. Her literary career flourished after she moved to France in 1907, where she established herself as a central figure in the expatriate community and formed a close friendship with Henry James. During World War I, she dedicated herself to relief work for refugees and soldiers, earning the French Legion of Honor for her tireless humanitarian efforts.

Wharton's writing was profoundly shaped by the rigid social codes and moral dilemmas of the Gilded Age, which she observed from the inside. Her experiences in both America and Europe allowed her to critique the limitations placed on women and the conflict between individual desire and societal expectations.
