Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer who became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. She is renowned for her sophisticated portrayals of New York’s upper-class society at the turn of the twentieth century, blending sharp social satire with psychological depth.

Born into a wealthy family in New York City, Wharton spent much of her childhood traveling through Europe, which fostered a cosmopolitan perspective and a lifelong love for architecture and design.
