The Clicking of Cuthbert

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881–1975) was an English novelist, playwright, and humorist who remains one of the most widely read and influential comedic writers of the twentieth century. He is best known for creating a series of whimsical, upper-class characters and for his masterful command of the English language, which elevated farce to a high literary art form.

Born in Guildford, Surrey, Wodehouse spent much of his childhood in boarding schools while his parents lived in Hong Kong, a period that deeply influenced his early stories about school life and male camaraderie. He began his career as a banker in London before transitioning to full-time writing, eventually finding immense success in both the United Kingdom and the United States. His experiences in the musical theater world of Broadway and the West End further refined his sense of timing and dialogue, contributing to the rhythmic quality of his prose.

Despite enduring significant controversy following his internment in Germany during World War II, Wodehouse continued to produce a prolific body of work that spanned over seventy years and included more than ninety books. He spent his later years in the United States, eventually becoming an American citizen and receiving a knighthood shortly before his death in 1975. His enduring legacy lies in the creation of the Blandings Castle saga and the beloved Jeeves and Wooster series, which continue to define the quintessential image of Edwardian leisure.
