Arthur Conan Doyle

1859 - 1930

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish physician who revolutionized the mystery genre, though he often felt imprisoned by his own creation. While practicing medicine in Southsea, he drew inspiration from his former university professor, Dr. Joseph Bell—a man capable of observing the smallest details to reach startling conclusions—to craft the character of Sherlock Holmes. This marriage of scientific observation and forensic logic turned a struggling doctor into a literary sensation, effectively birthing the modern detective story.

However, Doyle’s interests were far broader than the foggy streets of Victorian London. He was a prolific writer of historical romances, which he considered his most important work, and a pioneer of early science fiction. Later in life, profoundly affected by the losses of World War I, he became an outspoken and controversial advocate for Spiritualism. He spent his final years traveling the world to lecture on the paranormal and the possibility of communicating with the dead, a stark contrast to the cold, rational logic of the detective that made him famous.
