Ibrahim Ramzi (1884–1949) was an Egyptian playwright, essayist, and translator who stood among the early pioneers of modern Arabic theater and literature. Born in Mansoura, Egypt, he contributed significantly to establishing realistic Arabic theatrical drama and introducing Western literary classics to the Arab world. His work played a key role in shaping modern Egyptian dramatic arts during the early twentieth century.
In his youth, Ramzi traveled to England to pursue higher education, an experience that broadened his literary perspective and fueled his passion for translation and stagecraft. Upon returning to Egypt, he authored original stage plays that tackled social themes, patriotic history, and romantic drama, while simultaneously translating prominent European historical and literary texts into clear, expressive Arabic.
Beyond writing plays, Ramzi collaborated with pioneering theater troupes in Cairo and advocated for a national theatrical movement grounded in local Egyptian culture. His refined prose and sharp dramatic construction helped transition regional theater from popular street entertainment into a recognized artistic medium.
