Muhammad Yusuf Musa

1899 - 1963

Biography: Dr. Muhammad Yusuf Musa (1899–1963 AD) was an Egyptian jurist, legal theorist, and philosopher, considered one of the most prominent figures of jurisprudential renewal and philosophical reform at Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Egyptian universities during the twentieth century. He brilliantly succeeded in combining authentic Azhari training with contemporary philosophical methodology. His project revolved around highlighting the independence of Islamic law (Sharia) and its applicability to all times and places, while calling for collective ijtihad (independent reasoning) through jurisprudential academies.

He was born in the city of Zagazig in Sharqia Governorate in 1899 to a scholarly family. He completed the memorization of the Holy Quran at the age of twelve, demonstrating extraordinary intellect and a rare memory. He obtained the Alimiyya degree from Al-Azhar in 1925 with distinction. Despite being dismissed from teaching due to weak eyesight, he continued his specialized studies externally and ranked first, which led him to practice Islamic legal advocacy (Sharia law), earning widespread acclaim. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Mustafa Al-Maraghi, reinstated him to teaching in 1936, appointing him as a lecturer of philosophy and ethics at the Faculty of Theology (Usul al-Din). He later traveled to France and obtained his doctorate from Sorbonne University in 1948 with highest honors (Très Honorable) for his dissertation "Religion and Philosophy in the View of Averroes (Ibn Rushd)"—a rare distinction achieved by no other Azhari scholar of his generation except Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Draz.

He later moved to teach at the Faculty of Law at Cairo University and subsequently Ain Shams University as a professor of Islamic Sharia until his retirement in 1959. He also co-founded the Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Publishing Group and served as an expert on the Philosophy Committee at the Academy of the Arabic Language in Cairo. Dr. Muhammad Yusuf Musa passed away on August 8, 1963, after a struggle with diabetes, continuing to dictate his thoughts and legal rulings (fatawa) until the final days of his life.
