Naguib el-Rihani

1889 - 1949

Naguib El-Rihani (1889–1949) was an Egyptian author, actor, director, and theater figure, considered one of the most prominent pioneers of realistic comedic art and critical social comedy in the Arab world. He earned several titles, including "Leader of Comedic Theater," "Father of Comedy," "The Laughing Weeper," and "The Arab Chaplin." In his works, he combined satirical comedy with poignant human drama.

El-Rihani was born in the Bab El-Shariya district of Cairo to an Iraqi Chaldean father from Mosul who worked in the horse trade, and an Egyptian Coptic mother. He received an elite French education at the Frères School, where his early talent emerged. However, the death of his father and the decline of his family's wealth, along with his dismissal first from the Agricultural Bank and later from the sugar company in Nag Hammadi due to his passion for acting, drastically altered the trajectory of his life, leading him to face harsh conditions and live a vagabond existence on the streets of Cairo. This suffering refined his talent and enabled him to capture the pulse of the common people. He transitioned from tragedy to comedy and created the iconic character "Kish-Kish Bey," which sparked a theatrical revolution on Emad El-Din Street. He later formed a creative duo with Badie' Khairi and presented operettas with Sayed Darwish during the 1919 Revolution.

El-Rihani presented nearly eighty theatrical performances and left an enduring legacy in cinema. He began writing his memoirs in 1947, publishing excerpts in Al-Studio magazine. On a personal level, he married the artist Badia Masabni, and later married the German Lucy de Vernay, with whom he had his only daughter, Gina. He passed away in 1949 from typhoid fever shortly before the premiere of his famous film Ghazal Al-Banat (Flirtation of Girls).
