Dr. Muhammad Husayn Haykal (1888–1956) was a prominent Egyptian man of letters, novelist, historian, and politician, considered one of the pioneers of liberal and Enlightenment thought in the first half of the twentieth century. He holds the distinction of writing the first Arabic novel in the modern sense, and held high political, academic, and media positions in Egypt.
He was born in the village of Kafr Ghannam, near the city of Mansoura in the Dakahlia Governorate. He graduated from the Khedivial School of Law in Cairo in 1909, then traveled to France, earning a doctorate in law from the Sorbonne University in 1912. He practiced law for ten years after his return and became editor-in-chief of the newspaper Al-Siyasa in 1926.
He participated in the Committee of Thirty that drafted Egypt's 1923 Constitution and served as Minister of Public Instruction several times, in addition to leading the Ministry of Social Affairs. He also served as President of the Egyptian Senate from 1945 to 1950. He led the Liberal Constitutionalist Party from 1943 until the dissolution of political parties following the July 1952 Revolution. In the second half of his life, he turned toward Islamic historical writing from a modern scientific and analytical perspective, alongside writing biographies and travel literature.
