Henri-Joseph Guys (1787–1878) was a French diplomat, orientalist, and travel writer who served as the French consul in Beirut and Aleppo during the nineteenth century. He is widely recognized for his highly detailed, first-hand accounts of the social, political, and cultural life of Mount Lebanon and the Levant. His writings served as crucial historical documentation of the region during a period of profound transformation under Ottoman rule.

Born in Marseille, France, Guys entered the diplomatic service and spent several decades in the Ottoman Empire, gaining a deep understanding of its diverse communities. His tenure as the French consul in Beirut, beginning in the late 1830s, placed him at the center of critical historical events, including the Egyptian occupation and the subsequent sectarian conflicts of the 1840s. These experiences allowed him to observe the complex interactions between the Druze, Maronite, and Ottoman authorities from a unique diplomatic vantage point.
