Stanley Edward Lane-Poole (b. 1854) was a British orientalist, archaeologist, and historian recognized for his prolific academic contributions to Islamic history and numismatics. Educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, he dedicated much of his career to studying medieval Middle Eastern dynasties and cataloging Islamic coinage for the British Museum. His comprehensive historical works helped introduce Western audiences to the art, culture, and political governance of the Islamic world.

Born in London into a distinguished family of scholars, Lane-Poole was the grand-nephew of the famous orientalist Edward William Lane, whose scholarly work deeply influenced his early academic pursuits. Between 1874 and 1892, he worked at the British Museum cataloging Islamic coins, producing multi-volume catalogs that remain foundational references in numismatics. He later served as Professor of Arabic at Trinity College Dublin from 1898 to 1904, while also conducting archaeological research in Cairo for the Egyptian government.

Throughout his career, Lane-Poole authored dozens of books spanning biographies of historical leaders to sweeping narratives of Islamic empires. His firsthand research in Cairo and meticulous examination of primary Arabic manuscripts provided his narrative histories with exceptional detail and authority. His balanced portrayals of Islamic civilization distinguished his writing during an era when Western scholarship often held biased views toward the region.
