Abu Uthman Amr ibn Bahr al-Kinani al-Basri, historically known as Al-Jahiz (c. 776 CE), was an Arab polymath, prose writer, and Mu'tazilite theologian. He is widely celebrated as one of the most influential figures in classical Arabic literature and one of the principal founders of the "Adab" literary genre.
Born in Basra during the Abbasid Caliphate, Al-Jahiz cultivated his intellectual background in the thriving scholarly circles of his hometown, where he studied Arabic grammar, philology, and poetry. He later relocated to Baghdad, earning the patronage of Abbasid caliphs and high-ranking officials who valued his encyclopedic knowledge and political treatises. His involvement in the rationalist Mu'tazilite movement deeply contributed to shaping his analytical perspective, sharp wit, and empirical approach to knowledge.
Over the course of his long career, Al-Jahiz authored more than two hundred works encompassing biology, sociology, rhetoric, and economics. His writings were renowned for blending early scientific inquiry with anecdotal humor and insightful social commentary. He spent his final years continuing his literary work in Basra, where he passed away in 868 CE.
