Anecdotes of the Caliphs

Ibrahim Zaidan (1879–1956) was a Lebanese-Egyptian writer, publisher, and educator, widely regarded as a prominent figure of the Arab Renaissance (Nahda) and one of the pioneers of intellectual and educational thought in the early twentieth century. Born in Beirut, he later relocated to Cairo, where he dedicated his life to serving the written word and fostering literary and educational awareness. Alongside his brother, Jurji Zaidan, he played a pivotal role in establishing Dar Al-Hilal, turning it into a major landmark in the history of Arab publishing and culture.

His intellectual legacy is imbued with the spirit of education and enlightenment, rooted in his belief that a society’s rebirth begins with refining the minds of its youth and fostering a deep appreciation for the Arabic language. He managed the Al-Hilal printing press with the care of a devoted craftsman, making it a platform for disseminating knowledge and producing beautifully crafted books. Zaidan authored numerous linguistic and literary works distinguished by their clarity and eloquence, seamlessly blending moral instruction with wit, creating a body of literature that offered both enlightenment and the joy of reading.

Zaidan enriched the Arab library with works in children's literature and youth narratives, simplifying the arts of composition and literary style for the younger generation.
