The Adventures of Roderick Random

Tobias Smollett (1721–1771) was a Scottish physician and author who became one of the defining masters of the 18th-century picaresque novel. Drawing on his harsh, real-life experiences serving as a surgeon in the British Royal Navy, Smollett injected his fiction with a coarse, boisterous energy that stood in stark contrast to the polite, sentimental literature of his contemporaries.

His narratives are notoriously chaotic, violently funny, and absolutely packed with grotesque caricatures and colorful misfits. He built his reputation on fast-paced tales of rogues navigating a cruel, absurd world, heavily influencing later literary giants like Charles Dickens with his unforgettable eccentric character portraits and razor-sharp social satire.
