The Secret of Success

Yaqub Sarruf (1852-1927) was a pioneering Lebanese journalist, novelist, and publisher who played a central role in the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century Arabic literary renaissance, known as the Nahda. As the co-founder of the highly influential scientific and literary journal Al-Muqtataf, he dedicated his life to introducing modern scientific concepts and Western literary forms to Arabic-speaking audiences. His extensive body of work bridged the gap between Eastern cultural traditions and Western scientific advancements.

Born in the Lebanese village of Hadath, Sarruf pursued his higher education at the Syrian Protestant College, which is now the American University of Beirut, graduating in 1870. His passion for education and modern science led him to co-found the journal Al-Muqtataf in Beirut in 1876 alongside his colleague Faris Nimr. To escape strict Ottoman censorship and reach a wider audience, Sarruf relocated the publication to Cairo, Egypt, in 1884, where it became one of the most prominent intellectual forums in the Arab world.

In Cairo, Sarruf expanded his journalistic endeavors by co-founding the daily newspaper Al-Muqattam in 1889. Throughout his career, his writing was deeply shaped by his belief in scientific rationalism and social progress as tools for Arab advancement. Beyond his journalism, he authored several highly regarded historical novels and educational works that aimed to inspire intellectual curiosity and self-reliance among Arab youth.
