History of the Peloponnesian War

Thucydides (b. 460 BC) was an Athenian historian and military general. He is widely celebrated for his detailed chronicle of the decades-long conflict between Athens and Sparta. His analytical approach to historical events earned him recognition as a pioneer of scientific history and political realism.

Born into an influential aristocratic family in Athens, Thucydides was highly educated and well-positioned to observe the political landscape of classical Greece. In 424 BC, during the Peloponnesian War, he was elected as a military general and tasked with defending the strategic city of Amphipolis. However, his failure to prevent Spartan forces from capturing the city resulted in his twenty-year exile from his homeland.

This exile proved pivotal to his literary career, as it allowed him the freedom to travel extensively and conduct firsthand research. He gathered testimonies from both Athenian and Spartan combatants, striving for impartiality and objective truth rather than relying on myth or divine intervention. His rigorous methodology, focusing on human nature and power dynamics, fundamentally transformed the discipline of historical writing.
