Niqula Fayyad (b. 1873) was a Lebanese physician, poet, and orator who played a significant role in the cultural revival of the Arab Renaissance (Nahda). Blending a professional career in medicine with a lifelong devotion to Arabic literature, he gained broad recognition for his eloquent public addresses and refined poetry. His contributions to literary style and the art of modern Arabic rhetoric established him as a key figure in twentieth-century Levantine letters.
Born in Beirut, Fayyad completed his medical education at the Syrian Protestant College, which later became the American University of Beirut, graduating in 1895. Beside practicing medicine in Lebanon and Egypt, he immersed himself in Beirut's vibrant intellectual circles and scientific societies. His dual background as a medical doctor and a man of letters enabled him to bring intellectual precision and structured clarity to his writing and public speaking.
Fayyad was widely celebrated for his mastery of Arabic prose and verse, frequently delivering prominent addresses at major cultural and civic gatherings. Throughout his career, he worked to modernize Arabic expressive form while preserving traditional linguistic elegance and grammatical rigor. His legacy remains closely linked to his influential studies on public speaking and his enduring poetic works prior to his passing in 1958.
