Gustave Flaubert (1821–1880) was a titan of French literature and the demanding architect of modern literary realism. He was famously obsessive about his craft, sometimes agonizing for days over a single sentence in search of le mot juste—the perfect word. This relentless pursuit of stylistic perfection allowed him to write narratives of unprecedented psychological accuracy, actively stripping away the flowery sentimentality and idealized heroism of the Romantic era.

Flaubert turned his razor-sharp, fiercely objective gaze toward the suffocating banality and moral hypocrisy of the 19th-century French bourgeoisie. When his debut novel, Madame Bovary, was published, its unvarnished depiction of a provincial wife seeking escape through adultery scandalized the public and resulted in an infamous, though ultimately unsuccessful, obscenity trial.
