Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (b. 1849) was a British-American novelist and playwright best known for her classic children's literature. Born in Manchester, England, she later immigrated to the United States, where she established a highly successful writing career. Her enduring legacy rests on her ability to craft deeply emotional narratives about resilience, transformation, and the healing power of nature.

Following her father's death and subsequent family financial hardships, Burnett emigrated to Tennessee in 1865. To help support her family, she began publishing stories in American magazines during her teenage years, quickly gaining financial independence through her popular fiction. Her early experiences with poverty and relocation heavily influenced her recurring themes of sudden reversals of fortune and the stark contrasts between wealth and destitution.

Burnett achieved international fame with her 1886 novel Little Lord Fauntleroy, which became a massive commercial success and set fashion trends for young boys. Later in life, the tragic loss of her eldest son to tuberculosis in 1890 profoundly shifted her personal beliefs, drawing her toward spiritualism and Christian Science. This emotional journey, combined with her love for gardening at her English country home, Great Maytham Hall, directly inspired her most celebrated masterpiece, which explored themes of physical and emotional regeneration.
