The Prisoner of Zenda

Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863–1933), known professionally as Antony Hope, was a prolific British novelist and playwright who achieved worldwide fame as the creator of the Ruritanian romance genre. He is best remembered for his ability to blend political intrigue with high-stakes adventure, establishing a literary tradition of fictional European kingdoms.

Born in London and educated at Oxford, Hope initially pursued a career in law and was called to the bar in 1887. However, his legal practice provided him with the leisure time to begin writing, leading to the publication of his first novel in 1890. His literary breakthrough occurred in 1894 with the release of a tale concerning a commoner who must impersonate a king, a story that was reportedly written in just one month.

Beyond his fiction, Hope played a significant role in public service, particularly during World War I when he worked for the British Ministry of Information. His contributions to literature and his wartime efforts earned him a knighthood in 1918. He spent his later years in Surrey, continuing to write until his death, though his later works never quite matched the enduring cultural impact of his early adventure stories.
