Charles Lamb (1775–1834) was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian who is best remembered for his personal essays and children's literature. He was a central figure of the English Romantic movement, celebrated for his warm, humorous, and deeply human voice. His defining contribution to literature is his mastery of the personal essay, particularly through his famous pen name, Elia.

Born in London, Lamb studied at Christ's Hospital, where he formed a lifelong friendship with the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. He spent the majority of his professional life working as a clerk for the East India Company from 1792 to 1825, a stable career that supported his literary pursuits. In 1796, a family tragedy occurred when his sister, Mary Lamb, in a state of mental illness, killed their mother, leading Charles to become her lifelong guardian and dedicate himself to her care.

Despite these personal hardships, Lamb collaborated with his sister on several literary projects, most notably adapting classic works for younger audiences. He also became a key figure in London's literary circles, hosting weekly salons attended by prominent writers of the era, including William Wordsworth and William Hazlitt. His experiences navigating the bustling streets of London and his deep appreciation for Elizabethan literature heavily influenced his nostalgic and reflective writing style.
