The Life of Charlotte Bronte

Elizabeth Gaskell (b. 1810) is a celebrated English novelist and biographer best known for her insightful portrayals of the social and industrial shifts in Victorian Britain. Her sharp observations of class divisions and provincial life established her as one of the most distinctive literary voices of the nineteenth century.

Born Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson in Chelsea, London, she spent much of her youth in the Cheshire town of Knutsford, which later served as the inspiration for the fictional community in her classic novel Cranford. Following her marriage to the Unitarian minister William Gaskell in 1832, she settled in Manchester, an industrial epicenter that profoundly influenced her literary perspective. Immersed in the stark realities of the city's working class, she began writing fiction to bridge the gap between factory owners and laborers.

Her literary career launched anonymously with the 1848 publication of Mary Barton, a gritty depiction of industrial Manchester that brought her immediate critical attention and the admiration of contemporaries like Charles Dickens. Throughout her prolific career, she balanced domestic life with extensive travel and writing, producing social problem novels, historical biographies, and acclaimed short fiction for periodicals such as Household Words.
