Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl

Linda Brent (b. 1813), the pen name of Harriet Jacobs, was an American author, abolitionist, and social reformer. She is widely recognized for writing one of the most significant slave narratives in American history, focusing specifically on the sexual exploitation and maternal struggles of enslaved women. Her courageous testimony provided a unique and vital perspective on the abolitionist movement.

Born into slavery in Edenton, North Carolina, Jacobs endured years of harassment from her master. In a desperate bid for freedom, she escaped and spent seven years hiding in a cramped attic crawlspace in her grandmother's home, where she could watch over her children through a tiny loophole. She finally escaped to the North in 1842, where she found employment as a nursemaid and became deeply involved in abolitionist circles in New York and Rochester.

Encouraged by fellow reformers, she spent years writing her autobiography, which was eventually published in 1861 under her pseudonym to protect her family. During the Civil War, she transitioned to humanitarian work, organizing relief efforts and establishing schools for formerly enslaved people in Alexandria, Virginia, and Savannah, Georgia. She continued her advocacy for civil rights until her death in Washington, D.C., in 1897.
