No Trifling with Love

No Trifling with Love

Alfred de Musset

A masterpiece of Romanticism, this play by Alfred de Musset follows Camille and Perdican, whose excessive pride turns a game of seduction into tragedy. Caught between convent austerity and nature's vitality, they tear each other apart at the expense of innocent Rosette. With biting irony and poignant lyricism, Musset explores the cruelty of emotions and the eternal truth that one cannot toy with the human heart with impunity.

Alfred de Musset

1810 - 1857

Alfred de Musset (b. 1810) was a French dramatist, poet, and novelist celebrated as a central figure of nineteenth-century French Romanticism. He gained renown for his emotionally intense lyrical poetry and his psychologically complex plays, which bridged Romantic passion with classical wit. His writings captured the disillusionment and spiritual yearning of post-Napoleonic European youth.

Born in Paris, Musset joined Charles Nodier's literary salon at an early age and published his first poetry collection in 1829. Following early theatrical setbacks, he pioneered plays intended to be read in an armchair rather than staged, giving him extraordinary creative freedom. His passionate, tumultuous affair with novelist George Sand in 1833 profoundly transformed his life and writing.

The emotional fallout of that romance inspired his celebrated autobiographical prose examining his generation's moral malaise. Musset was elected to the Académie française in 1852 before his death in Paris in 1857. His innovative drama and verse permanently shaped French literature, establishing him as a master of romantic sorrow.
