James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) was the first great myth-maker of American literature, practically inventing the frontier novel and the maritime romance. Raised in the frontier settlement of Cooperstown, New York, he witnessed firsthand the rapid, often violent transformation of the American wilderness into civilized society. This vanishing frontier became the central obsession of his writing, allowing him to explore the deep moral conflicts between the natural world and the encroaching laws of men.

Cooper is best remembered for creating the archetypal American hero in Natty Bumppo (also known as Leatherstocking or Hawkeye)—a fiercely independent, rugged woodsman who lives in harmony with nature and his Native American companions. While later critics sometimes targeted his formal, highly romanticized prose, Cooper’s sweeping narratives established the foundational myths of westward expansion and indigenous displacement that would define American storytelling for centuries.
