The Adventures of the Last Abencerage

François-René de Chateaubriand (1768–1848) was a French writer, diplomat, and statesman who is widely regarded as the founder of Romanticism in French literature. His innovative use of descriptive prose and his focus on the interior emotional life of the individual fundamentally altered the course of European letters.

Born into a noble family in Brittany, Chateaubriand’s early life was marked by the political instability of the French Revolution. In 1791, he fled the violence of the Terror and traveled to North America, an expedition that provided him with the vivid natural imagery and cultural observations that would characterize his most famous works. After returning to Europe to fight for the Royalist cause, he spent several years in exile in London, where he lived in poverty while establishing his reputation as a formidable intellectual.

His subsequent career saw him navigate the complex political landscapes of the Napoleonic Empire and the Bourbon Restoration, serving in high-ranking roles such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Despite his political successes, he often felt alienated from his era, a sentiment that fueled his poetic explorations of loss, faith, and the passage of time. His experiences as a traveler and a witness to historical upheaval allowed him to bridge the gap between the classical traditions of the past and the burgeoning Romantic movement.
