Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884–1941) was an English novelist, critic, and dramatist who became one of the most prolific and widely read British authors of the early twentieth century. Renowned for his vivid storytelling, psychological depth, and mastery of both realistic and macabre themes, he made a defining contribution to literature through his expansive historical sagas and unsettling supernatural fiction. His ability to capture the social landscape of his era earned him immense commercial success and a knighthood.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Walpole moved to England at a young age and was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, before briefly pursuing a career in teaching. During the First World War, he served with the Russian Red Cross on the Eastern Front from 1914 to 1916, an intense experience that profoundly influenced his psychological outlook and inspired his award-winning novel, The Secret City. Upon returning to England, he settled in the scenic Lake District, where the dramatic landscapes of Cumbria became the backdrop for some of his most celebrated literary achievements.

Walpole was a central figure in the London literary scene, befriending prominent authors of his day such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, while actively promoting contemporary literature. In addition to his popular historical fiction, his fascination with the macabre and the darker aspects of human nature led him to write several acclaimed horror stories and psychological thrillers. By the time of his death at his home in Keswick in 1941, he had published dozens of novels, short story collections, and plays that reflected the anxieties of a changing world.
