Abu al-Faraj Jamal al-Din ibn Harun al-Malati, known as Bar Hebraeus (1226 - 1286 AD), was a prominent Syriac historian, theologian, philosopher, and physician, considered one of the greatest scholars of the Syriac Orthodox Church in the Middle Ages. He was renowned for his encyclopedic knowledge and profound contributions to history, theology, natural sciences, and philosophy, making him an important cultural bridge between Syriac and Islamic civilizations. His writings were characterized by a blend of philosophical methodology and theological spirit, leaving a rich intellectual legacy that remains a fundamental reference for researchers.

Bar Hebraeus was born in the city of Malatya, located in present-day Turkey, and grew up in a family of Jewish origin that converted to Christianity. He received his initial education in medicine and sciences from his father, Harun, who was a physician. His family was forced to flee to Antioch and then to Tripoli in Syria to escape the Mongol invasion, where he continued his advanced studies in philosophy, theology, and languages. In 1246 AD, he was consecrated bishop at the age of twenty and rose through ecclesiastical ranks until he was appointed Maphrian of the East of the Syriac Church in 1264 AD, a position he held until his death in Maragheh, Iran.

Bar Hebraeus lived during a turbulent historical era that witnessed the fall of Baghdad to the Mongols. These momentous events were reflected in his historical and philosophical writings, which were characterized by accuracy and objectivity. His extensive travels and his relationships with Mongol rulers and Muslim scholars, such as Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, allowed him access to vast libraries and rare manuscripts, enriching his knowledge and refining his humanistic vision. He used his extensive knowledge to promote civil peace and protect his flock, and he composed his works in eloquent Arabic and Syriac to bridge knowledge between different cultures and religions of his time.
