Amin Salama (1921–1998) was an eminent Egyptian translator, scholar, and author who dedicated his life to bridging the gap between classical Western literature and Arabic readers. He is celebrated for translating foundational Greek and Roman epics and dramas into Arabic, making these ancient masterpieces accessible to the Arab world.
Born in Egypt, Salama graduated from Cairo University's Department of Classics in 1943 and later obtained his master's degree in 1947. His deep academic training in ancient Greek and Latin shaped his career, leading him to work as a professor and a prolific writer who blended classical themes with modern Arabic prose.
Throughout his career, Salama authored several original novels and historical accounts alongside his monumental translations of Homer, Sophocles, and Euripides. His writing is characterized by its historical depth, emotional resonance, and a unique ability to adapt classical mythological narratives into compelling contemporary literature.
