Alphonse Daudet (1840–1897) was a prominent French novelist, playwright, and short story writer known for his vivid depictions of life in both Provence and Paris. He is celebrated as a major figure in nineteenth-century literature, often associated with the naturalist movement for his ability to blend sentimentalism with sharp social observation.

Born in Nîmes, Daudet moved to Paris in 1857 following his family's financial ruin and a difficult period working as a school usher in Alès. These early hardships, particularly his time in the educational system, provided the raw material for his semi-autobiographical writing and shaped his empathetic view of the marginalized. After gaining a position as a secretary to the Duc de Morny, he immersed himself in the high society and political circles of the Second Empire, experiences that would later inform his detailed "moeurs parisiennes" or Parisian manners series.

Daudet's literary career flourished during the 1860s and 1870s as he successfully balanced his love for the French South with the realities of urban industrialization. His service during the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 deepened his interest in national themes and the psychological impacts of social change. Despite suffering from a debilitating illness in his final years, he remained a central figure in the French literary establishment and a close associate of authors like Émile Zola and Gustave Flaubert.
