1927 - 1991
Yusuf Idris (1927–1991) was an Egyptian physician, playwright, and author widely regarded as the master of the modern Arabic short story. He revolutionized Arabic literature by blending classical prose with colloquial Egyptian dialogue to capture the authentic voice of the working class. His realistic and often provocative narratives earned him international acclaim and multiple nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Born in the Nile Delta, Idris studied medicine at Cairo University and practiced as a doctor in Cairo before committing fully to his literary career. His medical background provided him with a clinical yet deeply empathetic understanding of human suffering, which heavily influenced his realistic themes.
His active political stance against British colonialism and domestic regimes led to multiple periods of imprisonment throughout the 1950s. These experiences of confinement and censorship deeply shaped his lifelong defense of personal freedom and social justice.
