Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc (1864-1941) was a renowned French novelist and short story writer, famous for creating one of the most iconic characters in world detective literature. His major contribution lies in the invention of Arsène Lupin, the gentleman-burglar, a character who redefined the detective novel genre by bringing wit, charm, and social criticism to it. Through his captivating stories, he won over an international audience and left a lasting mark on popular culture.
Born in Rouen in 1864, Maurice Leblanc initially studied law before moving to Paris to dedicate himself entirely to writing. His early literary works, heavily influenced by Gustave Flaubert and Guy de Maupassant, were psychological novels that only met with critical acclaim at the time. It was in 1905, at the request of Pierre Lafitte, the director of Je sais tout magazine, that he wrote the first short story featuring Arsène Lupin, a fortuitous creation that would revolutionize his literary career.
The immediate triumph of this character led Leblanc to devote himself almost exclusively to the adventures of his famous burglar for several decades. Awarded the Legion of Honor for his contribution to French literature, he spent his last years writing in his villa in Étretat, a Norman resort town that greatly inspired the geography of his plots. He passed away in 1941 in Perpignan, leaving behind a monumental body of work that continues to fascinate readers and inspire numerous modern adaptations.
