Frances Hodgson Burnett

1849 - 1924

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was a British-American novelist and playwright best known for her enduring contributions to children's literature. Born in Manchester, England, she later immigrated to the United States, where she established a prolific writing career that spanned several decades. Her deeply imaginative storytelling and focus on the resilience of the human spirit cemented her legacy as one of the most beloved authors of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Following her father's death, Burnett's family faced severe financial difficulties, prompting their move to Tennessee in 1865. To help support her family, she began publishing stories in American magazines at a young age, quickly gaining financial independence through her popular romantic novels and children's stories. Her early experiences of childhood poverty and her subsequent rise to wealth heavily influenced the themes of class, resilience, and sudden reversals of fortune that frequently appear in her books.

Throughout her life, Burnett traveled extensively between England and the United States, maintaining a transatlantic lifestyle that shaped her creative outlook. Her passion for gardening, particularly at her home in Great Maytham Hall in Kent, directly inspired her most famous works. Her unique ability to capture the emotional depth of children and their capacity for self-transformation revolutionized children's fiction during the Edwardian era.
