1859 - 1930
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (b. 1859) was a British writer, physician, and historical novelist best known as the creator of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes. Through his meticulous plotting and atmospheric London settings, he revolutionized the detective fiction genre and established the template for the modern analytical sleuth.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and began working as a ship's surgeon before establishing a medical practice in Portsmouth. During his medical studies, he was deeply influenced by his professor Joseph Bell, whose powers of observation and deductive reasoning directly inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle published his first novel featuring the famous detective, A Study in Scarlet, in 1887, which quickly captured the public imagination and launched a global literary phenomenon.
Beyond his contributions to detective fiction, Doyle was a prolific writer who produced historical novels, science fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. He served as a volunteer physician in a field hospital in South Africa during the Second Boer War, an experience that led him to write a defense of British military operations that earned him a knighthood in 1902. In his later years, he became a passionate advocate for spiritualism, writing extensively on the subject and lecturing worldwide.
