Frank L. Baum

1856 - 1919

Frank Lyman Baum (b. 1856) was an American author, journalist, and playwright best known as the creator of the iconic Land of Oz. Through his pioneering children's literature, he established a uniquely American brand of fantasy that moved away from the grim morality of traditional European fairy tales.

Born in Chittenango, New York, Baum pursued numerous business ventures, including a failing petroleum axle grease business and a store in Aberdeen, Dakota Territory, before finding his true calling in writing. His early career as a newspaper editor and traveling salesman exposed him to diverse American landscapes and folklore, which later heavily influenced the setting and tone of his stories. In 1897, he published his first successful children's book, Mother Goose in Prose, illustrated by Maxfield Parrish, which paved the way for his literary breakthrough.

Following the immense success of his most famous creation, Baum wrote thirteen official sequels to his landmark 1900 novel, alongside several other fantasy series set in alternative universes. He actively managed theatrical and film adaptations of his work, eventually settling in Hollywood, California, where he founded his own movie production company. His enduring legacy rests on his ability to blend whimsical imagination with modern American optimism and technological marvels.
