Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

1931 - 2022

Geshe Kelsang Gyatso (1931–2022) was a Tibetan Buddhist monk, meditation teacher, scholar, and author who pioneered the adaptation of traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings for modern Western audiences. Affectionately known to his followers as "Geshe-la," he founded the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT-IKBU) and established an extensive global movement. His life work expanded the global reach of Tibetan Buddhism, though it was also marked by theological and political rifts within the broader Buddhist community.

Born in a remote village on the eastern Tibetan plateau, Gyatso entered Ngamring Jampling Monastery at age eight and spent twenty years studying at major monastic universities, primarily Sera Je Monastic College, where he earned the Geshe degree. After completing eighteen years of deep meditation retreats near the Nepali border and northern India, he relocated to England in 1977 at the request of his spiritual guide, Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, to teach at the Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre. In 1991, he formally founded the New Kadampa Tradition as an independent network, ultimately establishing over 1,300 meditation centers across more than 25 countries, publishing works through Tharpa Publications, and creating the Temples for World Peace initiative.

Gyatso's legacy was heavily shaped by his fierce devotion to the deity Dorje Shugden. When the 14th Dalai Lama banned this practice, severe disagreements and public protests followed, leading to Gyatso's expulsion from the Sera monastic community and the removal of his traditional Geshe title. He stepped down from active leadership of the NKT-IKBU in 2009 and withdrew completely from public life in 2013 until his death in 2022.
