Cinna or The Clemency of Augustus

Pierre Corneille (1606–1684) was a preeminent French dramatist and poet who is widely regarded as the father of French classical tragedy. His innovative approach to theatrical structure and character development fundamentally reshaped the landscape of European literature during the seventeenth century.

Born in Rouen, France, Corneille initially trained as a lawyer and served in the local administration before turning his full attention to the theater. His early successes in comedy eventually led to the 1636 production of Le Cid, a play that sparked a famous literary controversy known as the Querelle du Cid but ultimately secured his status as a master of the stage. This period was marked by his complex relationship with Cardinal Richelieu, whose patronage influenced both the opportunities and the criticisms Corneille faced.

Throughout the 1640s, he produced a series of masterpieces that defined the classical style, focusing on themes of duty, honor, and the conflict between private passion and public obligation. Despite a temporary retirement following the failure of one of his plays in 1652, he returned to the stage under the patronage of Louis XIV and continued writing until his death in Paris. His election to the Académie Française in 1647 cemented his legacy as a central figure in the Grand Siècle of French culture.
