Sally-Ann Ashton

Dr. Sally-Ann Ashton, born in 1969, is a British interdisciplinary scholar, researcher, and author with dual expertise as both an Egyptologist and a criminal psychologist. Appointed in July 2026 as the Director of the Center for Crime, Urban Research and Education (C-CURE) at the University of Houston-Downtown, she manages interdisciplinary research designed to shape urban and criminal justice policy. Her unique career bridges ancient world studies and contemporary issues surrounding urban crime and delinquency.

Before pivoting heavily into criminology, Dr. Ashton established a prominent career in ancient world scholarship. She earned her PhD in Egyptian archaeology from King's College London with a focus on Ptolemaic sculpture, later working as an assistant keeper at the British Museum and the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, and as Senior Assistant Keeper in the Department of Antiquities at the University of Cambridge. Her interactions with inmates during educational work in high-security prisons exposed Eurocentric biases in traditional archaeology, prompting her to advocate for an African-centered perspective on Egyptology.

Dr. Ashton's research in criminal psychology centers on juvenile delinquency, urban crime, and offender desistance. She spent nearly two decades conducting fieldwork and teaching within Her Majesty's Prisons in England, specializing in violent offending, youth gangs, and child criminal exploitation. Prior to her directorial role at the University of Houston-Downtown, she also served as a Senior Research Scientist and Research Division Lead at the Texas Juvenile Crime Prevention Center at Prairie View A&M University.
