Biography

John Buchan (b. 1875) was a Scottish novelist, historian, and statesman who left an indelible mark on modern adventure fiction. He is best remembered for his fast-paced thrillers and his creation of the iconic literary hero Richard Hannay.

Born in Perth, Scotland, Buchan studied at the University of Glasgow and Oxford University before embarking on a diverse career in law, publishing, and public service. His early experiences included working as a colonial administrator in South Africa, which profoundly influenced his writing and inspired his adventure novel Prester John. During the First World War, he served as Director of Information, blending his literary skills with national service.

Later in life, Buchan's distinguished public career culminated in his appointment as Governor General of Canada in 1935, a role he held with great distinction.
