The EPUB Reader
Some books on the platform also offer an EPUB reading mode. You can switch to it from the reader toolbar (look for the eBook icon).
EPUB Reader Features
- Themes — Choose between Light, Dark, Sepia, or Gray backgrounds.
- Font customization — Adjust font family (Serif, Sans, Mono), font size, line height, letter spacing, and margins.
- Page transitions — Choose between Curl, Slide, or Fade page-turn animations.
- Bookmarks — Tap the bookmark icon, then choose Add bookmark to save the passage you are reading, or View bookmarks to open the list. Each bookmark is named for you from the chapter title and its passage, and it reopens at the same sentence in the web reader too.
- Search — Full-text search across the entire EPUB with context previews.
- AI tools — Select text to access Clarify, Translate, and Listen, just like in the web reader.
- Highlights and annotations — Save color-coded highlights with notes and browse them from the annotations panel.
- Continue Reading — When you reopen a book, a popup offers to resume from your last position, and a progress bar shows the current chapter and percentage.
- Fullscreen — A distraction-free reading mode, with full right-to-left and two-page spread support.
Switching Between the EPUB and Web Reader
You can move any book between the EPUB reader and the SmartBook web reader without losing your place. Both readers carry the same exact position and passage, so switching engines mid-chapter is seamless.
Offline Sync
Bookmarks and highlights are kept on the device first, then synced to your account when the connection returns, so they are still there when you switch readers or devices.
