What Offline Means Here
Two different things are often confused: offline-safe editing and offline reading.
Your bookmarks, highlights, and notes are written to the device first, so nothing you record is lost when your connection drops; they sync to the server as soon as you are back online. This works on every plan.
Reading a whole book without a connection is offline reading, and it needs downloaded content.
Downloading a Book
- Open the book and look for the download action in the reader, or use My Books on your dashboard.
- The book is stored encrypted on the device.
- Open it later from My Library, which lists everything available offline.
Availability
- Scholar plans include offline reading across the web, mobile, and desktop apps.
- Reader Pro keeps bookmarks, highlights, and AI chat history in sync between devices, but does not include offline reading.
- Downloaded titles are usually EPUBs. Interactive books need their chapters cached before offline use.
- Publishers may set an expiry date on an offline copy; when it passes, the book needs to be opened online again.
Offline and DRM
Offline copies stay tied to your account and count toward your registered devices. Remove a device you no longer use if you reach the limit — see Managing Your Devices.
What Still Needs a Connection
AI chat, clarify, translate, and premium voices are generated on a server, so they resume working when you reconnect. Standard device voices for text-to-speech keep working offline.
