Biography

Kallistos Ware (1934–2022), born Timothy Richard Ware, was an English Eastern Orthodox bishop, theologian, and one of the most influential Western exponents of Orthodox Christianity in the modern era. Serving as a titular metropolitan of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, he became widely celebrated for introducing Eastern Christian theology, spirituality, and liturgical life to the English-speaking world.

Educated at Westminster School and Magdalen College, Oxford, Ware converted from Anglicanism to Eastern Orthodoxy in 1958. He was ordained to the priesthood and tonsured as a monk at the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian on the Greek island of Patmos in 1966. In the same year, he was appointed the Spalding Lecturer in Eastern Orthodox Studies at the University of Oxford, an academic post he held with distinction for thirty-five years until his retirement in 2001.

Ware combined meticulous academic scholarship with active pastoral ministry and a deep commitment to ecumenical dialogue. His collaborative English translation of the Philokalia and his numerous theological treatises reflected his profound immersion in the patristic tradition, hesychasm, and the practice of the Jesus Prayer, shaping generations of readers and seekers across denominational lines.
