Hassan Hanafi (1935–2021) was an influential Egyptian philosopher, academic, and public intellectual who served as a leading voice in modern Islamic thought. As a prominent professor of philosophy at Cairo University, he dedicated his career to reconciling traditional Islamic heritage with the demands of modernity and social justice. He is best known for pioneering the "Heritage and Renewal" project, which sought to reconstruct classical Islamic theology to address contemporary political and social challenges.
Born in Cairo, Egypt, Hanafi pursued his early education locally before earning his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Cairo University in 1956.
