Biography

Fritz Kreisler (b. 1875) was an Austrian-born American composer and violin virtuoso widely regarded as one of the greatest violin masters of the twentieth century. He is best known for his sweet tone, expressive phrasing, and charming original compositions and arrangements that remain staples of the violin repertoire.

Born in Vienna, Austria, Kreisler studied at the Vienna Conservatory and later under Joseph Hellmesberger Jr. and Anton Bruckner, before moving to Paris to study with Joseph Massart and Lambert Massart. He achieved international acclaim as a concert violinist, touring extensively across Europe and the Americas and captivating audiences with his distinctively warm vibrato and inimitable style.

During the First World War, Kreisler briefly served in the Austrian army before being wounded and honorably discharged, an experience that deeply influenced his perspective on global conflict. He subsequently emigrated to the United States, officially becoming a U.S. citizen in 1943, and spent his later years continuing his musical career and composing beloved works.
