Agatha Christie

Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie (1890–1976) was an English writer and playwright. She is widely known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. As the best-selling novelist of all time according to the Guinness World Records, her defining contribution to literature is her mastery of the classic murder mystery.

Born in Torquay, Devon, Christie served as a nurse during World War I, an experience that provided her with a deep knowledge of poisons that she later utilized in her debut novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Her literary career flourished during the Golden Age of Detective Fiction, a period in which she revolutionized the genre with complex plots and unexpected twists. In 1926, she experienced a highly publicized eleven-day disappearance, which remains one of her life's most intriguing mysteries.

Christie's extensive travels, particularly her archaeological expeditions to the Middle East with her second husband, Sir Max Mallowan, heavily influenced several of her most famous settings and plots. In addition to her novels, she wrote the world's longest-running play, The Mousetrap, which opened in London's West End in 1952. She was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971 for her contributions to literature, cementing her legacy before her passing in Oxfordshire in 1976.
